A MEDIA-based competition has been launched for students between the ages of 11 and 25 as part of the World Manx Association's centenary celebrations.
The association was founded in 1911 by Richard Cain and is celebrating its landmark year with a week-long series of events based around Tynwald Day.
The Manx in the Media competition has a prize fund of £400.
World Manx Association president Peter Kelly said: "The idea is for each Manx in the Media project to focus on any aspect of Manx life, history, language or culture – students just need to choose their subject and which type of media they want to use.
"They may want to write an article, start a blog, make a short film or record a programme for radio.
"The choice is up to them, and there is no restriction on length. The winning entries will be reproduced, or featured within, a centenary booklet we are publishing."
Example subjects for the competition are:
• A person, a mentor, someone in history, or a relative that has inspired you, who you think deserves recognition
• A strong feeling or emotion about being Manx or about the Island
• A place in the Island, or indeed the Island as a whole
• An inspiring piece of Manx music
• A Manx blog, website or media outlet which strives to promote the Island positively
The competition is split into two categories - ages 11 to 16 and 17 to 25 - and there will be two prizes in each category. The winners receive £150 and the runners up £75.
Submissions should be sent to the World Manx Association by midnight on Friday, April 29 - either by email to worldmanxassociation@manx.net or by post to Manx in the Media, 62 Ballacriy Park, Colby, IM9 4LX.
Events to mark the WMA's centenary get underway on Friday, July 1 with a reception for homecomers and World Manx members.
The following night sees the association's annual dinner, held at the Sefton Hotel, Douglas, which it’s hoped will include a video link-up with some of the Manx societies around the globe.
A homecomers' church service will be held in a marquee at the Nunnery on Sunday, July 3, and the next day there will be a tour of homes and sites around the Island with an historic link to the World Manx Association.
The celebrations will move on to St John's for Tynwald Day, followed by a centenary concert at the Villa Marina, Douglas, on the evening of Wednesday, July 6, featuring many well-known local musicians, singers and poets.
Thursday, July 7 will see civic tours of Douglas Town Hall and the Tynwald precincts, before the week draws to a close on the Friday with a farewell reception.
