ALISTAIR Aitken Montgomerie has been appointed as Deemster.
Deputy High Baliiff Montgomerie will preside over the Court of General Gaol Delivery.
He was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh, Manchester University and the College of Law before being admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales on July 2, 1979. From 1980 to 1991 he was involved in a wide range of criminal cases in England.
He came to the Island in 1991 and worked within the Attorney General's Chambers. Since June 2003 he held the position of Deputy High Bailiff and has acted as a panel Deemster from time to time presiding over numerous General Gaol matters.
Deputy High Baliiff Montgomerie said: "I am delighted that His Excellency has seen fit to appoint me as Deemster. I look forward to presiding over the Court of General Gaol Delivery. I am keen to make a continuing contribution to the administration of criminal justice on this Island and I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead."
