Island fundraisers mark World Kidney Day

by isleofman.com 10th March 2011

A GROUP of local fundraisers are raising awareness of kidney disease as part of World Kidney Day today.

The Jack Quirk Renal Care Fund works to raise funds for the renal unit and kidney patients in the Isle of Man.

Supporters have arranged two public awareness stands which will be in the Strand Shopping Centre, between 10am and 4pm today, and the main entrance of Noble's Hospital all week.

They will also be bag packing at Shoprite in Victoria Road, Douglas, today.

On Saturday the group will be holding an afternoon tea event from 2pm to 4.30pm at the St John Ambulance Headquarters in Glencrutchery Road, Douglas. Tickets cost £2.50 and there will be a raffle and various stalls.

Chronic kidney disease is common, harmful and treatable. The disease is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, established renal failure and all cause mortality.

Based on UK figures (NEOERICA 2007) chronic kidney disease affects approximately 8,600 people in the Isle of Man and a significant percentage of these have the potential to progress. Noble's Hospital saw on average 1,288 dialysis patients per year between 2007 and 2010.
