Concern over judge recruitment

Yesterday (Tuesday) in the House of Keys, Chief Minister Tony Brown assured members no instruction had ever been issued by the Council of Ministers to the attorney general to interfere with the judicial process.

But a legal counsel to a Manx corporate service provider, and former Falkland Islands senior magistrate, says she is concerned about political involvement in recruiting judges in the Isle of Man.

Clare Faulds says a committee interviewing for the post of First Deemster includes the chief minister and President of Tynwald Noel Cringle, and only one member of the judiciary.

She says that might create a perception the appointment was a political one:
