Fenella Beach closed after chemical drum is washed up

by isleofman.com 8th March 2011

FENELLA Beach in Peel was closed yesterday after a chemical drum was washed up.

Two chemical incident units from Douglas and two pumping appliances from Peel were called to the beach at 3pm.

The beach was closed while fire-fighters wearing chemical protection suits took samples of the drums contents. An Ahura First Defender handheld chemical identification system was also used to determine what the drum contained.

The drum was found to contain polystyrene based resin which posed only a minor hazard.

Fire crews removed the drum for disposal and the beach was re-opened less than an hour later.
