Call for inquiry into possible political interference

The independence of the judiciary must be defended.

That's the belief of Onchan MHK Peter Karran who will ask questions on the issue in the House of Keys tomorrow (Tuesday).

It follows comments made by a prosecuting QC at the end of a recent case involving former business tycoon Trevor Baines, his wife and their former advocate Jenny Holt.

David Farrar QC made it known the Attorney General's Chamber had been seeking custodial sentences to send a message to the international community that the Isle of Man was tough on financial crime.

Mr Karran says the judiciary must be able to enforce the law passed by parliament as it sees fit (first part of audio file):

Mr Karran is also asking if the chief minister will support an independent inquiry to take evidence on whether the Manx government has motivated or influenced the judiciary or police for political reasons.

He believes the Isle of Man is a better place than it was 20 years ago, but thinks standards must be upheld (second part of audio file):
