Douglas 'honey pots' could lose value

The Isle of Man's taxi trade is facing a major overhaul, which could see an end to restrictions on where drivers can work.

Later this month Tynwald will be asked to approve an all-Island ply-for-hire system.

At present, taxi plates are issued for four geographic areas and drivers are not allowed to pick up fares outside their district.

Previous attempts to reform the system have met fierce opposition from cabbies, many of them Douglas-based, who feared a loss of business if drivers from others parts of the Island moved in.

Director of highways Richard Pearson says the value of a taxi plate could also change dramatically:
