Sudden death of Carl Gandy - a great Isle of Man character

by isleofman.com 3rd March 2011

MANY people across the Isle of Man have been shocked by the sudden death after a short illness of Carl Gandy, managing director of Nationwide International and a resident of Port Erin.

One of the Island’s great characters with a wide circle of friends in the finance sector, the southern community and golf, Carl Gandy died in Noble’s Hospital on Tuesday after a serious but short illness.

Graham Beale, chief executive of Nationwide Building Society, said, “Carl brought a wealth of energy and hard work to his roles at Nationwide and he will be sorely missed by his peers and colleagues, especially those in Nationwide International and Nationwide UK Ireland.

“Our sympathies go out to his wife Julie and their five children.”

Carl Gandy was a larger than life personality whose sense of humour and business acumen were his trademarks. He built Nationwide International from small beginnings, using his astute business sense and his people skills to create one of the most successful investment companies within the Manx finance sector.

However, it was his never-ending optimism and wonderful communication skills which set him apart from others, together with a sharp sense of wit and humour - for which he will most be remembered and missed.

Carl joined Nationwide Overseas Limited on 5 April 1994 as business development manager. He was promoted to manager, Nationwide Overseas Limited in October 1996 and became managing director of Nationwide International in 1997.

He has been instrumental in the success of Nationwide’s international deposit-taking activities where he presided over a five fold increase in business during his tenure as managing director.

More recently he established Nationwide’s first european operation in Dublin, becoming Head of International Brands in February 2010, with responsibility for both the Isle of Man and Dublin businesses.  This too was a great success with a high street branch being added to the Dublin operation in December 2010.

The date for Carl Gandy’s funeral is Monday, March 7 at 1pm at Port Erin Methodist Church.
