Council accepts indoor bus station is needed

by isleofman.com 1st March 2011

Douglas Borough Council is reaffirming its support for the redevelopment of the former bus station site in Lord Street.

It follows a suggestion from Councillor Michael Gelling that an indoor facility for passengers should be built there as part of the forthcoming regeneration scheme.

However, the council is also backing the development of 'a high quality indoor bus station' as close as possible to the town centre.

Council leader David Christian hopes the economic climate doesn't prevent the current plans for the Lord Street site going ahead (play audio file):

Councillor Christian says if the scheme planned for the Lord Street site goes ahead, a bus station with a multi-storey car park above could be built across the road, towards the Sea Terminal, on land formerly occupied by Steam Packet buildings.
