THE controversial subject of parking charges and the possible introduction of new charges in some parts of the Island is to be investigated by the government.
The Department of Infrastructure has established a working group, headed by Tim Crookall MHK, to identify a future strategy and to assess public opinion on the subject.
Views from the public will be accepted by the working group up to April 8th.
Among the issues that the working group will be looking is identifying a strategy for the most cost effective way of improving parking provision in problem areas which may include investigations into the possible introduction of parking charges in some areas.
Tim Crookall said, “This is an important issue which impacts on anyone who owns or uses a vehicle and, for the working group to be able to produce a concise and far reaching report, it is important to listen to the views of the public and businesses.
“I am inviting comments from the public and businesses on all of the aspects of issues associated with both on and off street parking. This is an opportunity to help formulate a long-term strategy which is cost effective for the Island and meets the needs of as many people as possible.
“I am aware of the burden that parking charges place on the motorist and whilst these have to be of a level to reflect the capital and revenue costs of providing off street parking they should only be proportionate to the costs involved in providing an improved facility for the motorist.”
