THE Office of Fair Trading is warning residents to be wary if they receive text messages telling them they have won millions of pounds.
A number of people have contacted The Office of Fair Trading and Manx Telecom after receiving texts which ask them to provide personal details and financial information in order to claim the money.
Bill Henderson MHK, chairman of the Office of Fair Trading, said: "Consumers should be very careful to ensure that they know who they are dealing with.
"Never take risks with your personal or financial information. If it gets in the wrong hands it can be disastrous for you. Bank accounts can be emptied and your personal details used to set up fraudulent identities. - if you get a text like this press the delete button."
The Office of Fair Trading has the following advice for anyone who receives a suspicious text message:
- Be sceptical - ask yourself how you could win a prize without entering a competition.
- Remember that if you have won something you shouldn't have to pay anything to receive your prize.
- Never reveal credit card or bank account details unless you're sure who you're dealing with.
