Drivers told go hands free while driving

by isleofman.com 18th February 2011

A CAMPAIGN to encourage drivers not to use mobile phones while driving has been launched in the Island.

Operation Hands Free has been organised by the Isle of Man Constabulary and the Road Safety Unit of the Department of Infrastructure.

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne MHK said: "Last year being distracted behind the wheel caused 37 road traffic accidents in the Isle of Man.

"It is important for motorists to remember that it is an offence to use a hand held mobile phone while driving whether making a call or texting.

"I would also like to remind drivers that if their phone rings they should pull over in a safe place where they will not be a danger to other motorists and pedestrians."

Inspector Mark Britton said: "Mobile phones cause a number of accidents on our roads and we are fully backing Operations Hands Free. Don't risk causing an accident or being prosecuted - make sure you are hands free or pull over safely if you need to answer a call."

Anyone prosecuted for using a mobile phone while driving can be fined up to £1,000.
