Cav declared but it's Goss who wins

by isleofman.com 16th February 2011

It was a case of mistaken identity from organisers who originally declared Manx cyclist Mark Cavendish had won today's second stage of the Tour of Oman ended in another bunch sprint finish.

However, it was his HTC High Road team-mate Australian Matt Goss who had crossed the line first to take the honours and continue his fine early season form.

Goss now leads the General Classification by 4 seconds.

Second place went to Italian Daniele Bennati with Team Sky rider Edvald Boasson Hagen in third.

Cavendish eventually finished 10 minutes 34 seconds later in 82nd position and is 74th overall from the 127 riders competing. However, he is 5th in the Points classification just four points adrift of Boasson Hagen.

Cav was beaten into second yesterday by Theo Boss.

Afterwards, he claimed the signage towards the end of the stage was misleading....and he had been impeded by a spectator standing in the middle of the road near the finish.

It's been a topsy-turvy start to 2011 for Cav with two big crashes at the Tour Down Under and the Tour of Qatar.
