AN investigation is underway to determine what happened when a Manx2.com flight crashed at Cork Airport yesterday killing six people.
The Air Accident Investigation Unit along with senior management from Manx2.com travelled to Cork yesterday after the Manx2.com flight, which was operated by Flightline BCN, crashed on its third attempt at landing in fog shortly before 10am.
Four passengers and two crew were killed as the flight reportedly flipped upside down and caught fire. Another four passengers were seriously injured.
Leo Murray of the Air Accident Investigation Unit is leading the investigation. He told the BBC: "Yesterday we completed a site survey at Cork and we've done a preliminary inspection of the wreckage.
"Late last night we were successful in recovering the so-called black boxes - the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder - which will be crucial to my investigation.
"We've also impounded all the air traffic records at the airport."
Chairman of Manx2.com Noel Hayes said: "Manx2.com has never experienced anything like this in our five year history and the tragedy has been a terrible shock to us all."
The main runway at Cork Airport will remain shut until 4pm today. Many flights to and from the airport have been cancelled or changed to operate from Shannon Airport.
