Lay offs would hasten railway's decline - claim

The Isle of Man's vintage rail network is in perennial decline and laying off many of the staff who maintain it will only make things worse.

That's the view of Robert Hendry of the Isle of Man Tram and Railway Preservation Society.

On Tuesday it was announced up to 22 of the 34 maintenance staff at the Banks Circus depot could lose their jobs over the next two years.

Mr Hendry says rolling stock that was in good condition 20 years ago is now junk, and in a much worse state than many heritage railways in the United Kingdom:
