There are concerns the kerbside collection scheme in the east of the Island could collapse, if Onchan, one of the three participating local authorities, decides to pull out.
That's the view of Malew and Santon MHK Graham Cregeen, the member of the Department of Infrastructure with responsibility for recycling.
Onchan, Braddan and Douglas have been trialling a three year government funded scheme which runs to September this year, after which the authorities have agreed to fund an extension of six months.
But chairman of Onchan Commissioners Brian Stowell has said recycling must be economically viable, and a decision on whether the scheme should be permanent could be made before Onchan, Douglas and Braddan pick up the tab.
Mr Cregeen says Onchan agreed to the funding, and if they pull out it could mean the end of the scheme:
