'Future of scheme should be clear already'

The chairman of Onchan Commissioners believes recycling must be economically viable, and shouldn't be done merely 'for the sake of it'.

Brian Stowell was speaking after a meeting about the future of the kerbside collection scheme, in which Onchan, Braddan and Douglas have participated since September 2008.

Government funding is due to end in September this year, after which the three local authorities will keep it going for a further six months.

The extension will provide more time for a decision to be made on whether the scheme should become permanent, but Mr Stowell says he had hoped some clear evidence of its viability, or otherwise, could have been found by now:
