INITIAL work by Manx Gas as part of the natural gas conversion project will see the disused railway area off Greenlands Avenue from Gardeners Lane in Ramsey temporarily closed to the public.
It will be inaccessible from Monday, January 31 to Monday, February 7.
Manx Gas engineering manager Robert Gardner said: "Unfortunately, this will directly affect the rear access to the occupants of 1 to 41 Greenfields Avenue and those members of the general public who may use the pathway.
"Ahead of the conversion project, which in 2012 will bring in natural gas to Ramsey, we must carry out some essential mains installation and modification works and in this particular instance we need to lay a new supply main.
"We do apologise for any inconvenience or disruption this may cause but it is necessary in order to ensure the highest levels of safety. Anyone requiring further information should contact 644459."
The first major step in the conversion project begins on February 28 with a survey of the 6,800 properties which will benefit from conversion to natural gas.
Carried out by a team of specially trained Manx Gas engineers, the survey will identify all connected gas appliances, perform a gas safety inspection and do minor repairs on certain safety related defects.
Mr Gardner said: "We will be starting in Ramsey before moving to the South and finally the West of the Island and all residents will be notified prior to their property being surveyed."
