THE growing popularity of stargazing in the Isle of Man has resulted in a capacity audience for tonight’s lecture by a local astronomy expert.
All 200 free tickets for tonight’s presentation at the Manx Museum by Howard Parkin, chairman of the Isle of Man Astronomical Society, were snapped up very soon after the event was announced.
In fact, demand has been such that the organisers have set up a video link to a separate room at the museum to enable more people to attend.
“It has proved to be very, very popular,” said a Manx Museum spokesman. “The free tickets were distributed very quickly after the event was announced. It looks like the additional room with the video link might also be full too.”
Howard Parkin will explain the mysteries of astronomy with his free lecture 7.30pm (doors open 7pm), entitled “The Manx Night Sky”, giving an insight into the history of astronomical events visible from the Isle of Man and current and future events. The lecture will also include a review of the Isle of Man’s role in the space industry.
• The Isle of Man Astronomical Society meets on the first Thursday of every month at 8pm at its observatory off the Lhoobs Road in Foxdale. Members of the public are warmly invited to attend with no obligation to join. If anyone wishes to become a member after attending a few meetings the annual subscription is £27.50.
