HOAX calls have been received by the public with the caller claiming to be from the Manx Electricity Authority.
The caller asks for the customer to verify the serial number on their electricity meter and then goes on to state that an emergency rate is being applied to them "as they have been overcharged".
During the call customers have also been asked if it would be convenient for the MEA to visit the property.
However the MEA said these calls are not from the authority and anyone who receives one should report it to the police.
Anyone who is unsure whether a call is genuine or not should contact the MEA's Customer Services team on 687675.
The Office of Fair Trading said: "The MEA have confirmed that these calls are not from them.
"If you get a call like this ask for a return telephone number and do not tell the caller anything until you have first checked with the business they claim to be ringing on behalf of that the calls are legitimate.
"If anyone calls at your door don't let them in. Ask for their photographic identification and before you agree to give them entry to your property telephone the company they say they are working for and ask if this person is one of their employees and if they are authorised to call at your home.
"Don't be afraid to challenge the caller whether on the telephone or at the door.
"If you are worried contact your local police station – they will be happy to help you."
