Hanbidge takes Over 50s Island Squash Championship

by isleofman.com 25th January 2011

COLIN Hanbidge beat last year's Over 50s Island Squash Championship winner Dave Griffiths in a dramatic finale to this year's competition held at Mount Murray.

Seeded at Number 4, Colin took the first game only for Dave to level the scores by taking the second.

In the third Colin saved one game point to take the game to a tie-break, which Dave won, taking the two clear points needed.

Dave saved game ball in the fourth to take the second game in a row to a tie-break. Both players saved game balls before Colin levelled the tie at 2-all.

Dave raced to a 7-1 lead in the decider before Colin pegged him back. With Dave on match ball at 10-9 in the fifth, the referee over-ruled the marker's call to bring the scores level and take the match into its third tie-break game.

With Colin serving, he did enough to take the two clear points needed to take the game and with it the 2011 Over 50s Island Championship.

In the 3rd/4th place play-off Dave O'Neil beat Ricky Broadbent 3-1 while, in the remaining tie of the night, Phil Shaw came from 0-2 down to beat John Watterson in a closely contested game.

In accepting the trophy Colin thanked tournament organiser Les Callow for all his hard work and Mount Murray for hosting the event.
