Young people given opportunity to star in Commonwealth Youth Games opening ceremony

by isleofman.com 21st January 2011

YOUNG people in the Island are being encouraged to take part in the opening ceremony of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games.

Walk the Plank, a company made up of artists and engineers, is responsible for producing the ceremony and is looking for volunteers between the ages of 13 and 19 to take part.

The ceremony will be held at the newly refurbished stadium The Bowl and will see 1,000 athletes from 71 countries take part.

Liz Pugh, producer and co-founder of Walk the Plank, said: "The 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games opening ceremony will be a vibrant and inclusive event that will be huge fun to be part of.

"It's important that the people of the Island are part of this occasion and have the opportunity to celebrate the games, and Manx culture, on the global stage."

Walk the Plank has recently returned from Turku in Finland where it opened the city’s Capital of Culture year with a large scale event involving acrobatics, the world’s largest fire drawing and finale fireworks.

The company also produced the lantern element of the closing ceremony for the 17th Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

The Commonwealth Youth Games organising committee, in conjunction with Walk the Plank, is running open workshops to recruit performers and other participants for the ceremony.

At the workshops volunteers will be able to find out more about the event, meet the creative team and work with the choreographers who will be creating the show.
