by isleofman.com 18th January 2011

A meeting attended by over 100 people has voted against a proposed transfer of land from the primary school at Kirk Michael to developers Dandara, to allow a housing development to go ahead.

The development would include the construction of a roundabout at Douglas Road corner, on the TT course.

The meeting was called by local MHK David Cannan and was attended by representatives of the commissioners, members of the public and interested parties.

Chairman of Michael Commissioners Steve Hamer told the gathering the proposed residential development of around 100 dwellings was on land which was zoned for development some years ago (first part of audio file):

There was some robust questioning from the floor and at the end of the meeting a motion was voted upon. It read: 'This meeting is content that the Department of Education and Children transfer to Dandara the ownership of all or part of Michael School playing field, subject to specified conditions as detailed in the memorandum from Heritage Homes, dated January 7, 2011.'

Mr Cannan addressed the meeting on the vote (second part of audio file):

(Vote: 56-37 against, with around 15 people abstaining).
