THERE will be fewer sailings to Ireland this year after the Steam Packet Company withdrew Snaefell from the operational fleet.
The company said it has reviewed sailing frequency and fares as a result of the increased freight competition from rival company Mezeron.
As a result of the changes there will be 11 fewer sailings on the Irish routes.
Mark Woodward, chief executive for the Steam Packet Company, said: "The review of our passenger operations has taken place and in order to maintain core services and wide availability of special offer fares the decision has been taken to withdraw Snaefell from the operational fleet.
"While this change results in 11 fewer return sailings on the Irish routes the exclusive use of Manannan for fast craft services means that passenger capacity on the Irish routes has increased around 33 percent.
"Passengers will also benefit from the enhanced levels of comfort and sea-keeping abilities that Manannan delivers.
"We can also carry bigger vehicles on Manannan such as coaches and larger motorhomes which will open up new markets for the tourism sector."
He added: "The Steam Packet Company intends to continue to take all steps necessary to maintain its share of the freight market."
Passengers travelling to Belfast and Dublin will now sail on the Manannan.
