YOUNG people could soon find themselves with a lot more to do after a number of recommendations to improve the social facilities available in the Island were published.
The Council of Ministers have published 19 recommendations, following a public consultation, which stemmed from a working group set up by the Chief Minister.
The group consulted young people and communities on the availability and need for informal social facilities for young people. 38 responses were received in total.
Many of the recommendations require further consideration by various government departments who will report back in the coming months.
Recommendations include the potential for youth cafes in the regions outside of Douglas, access to the wildlife park for unaccompanied young people and the development of mountain bike trails specifically for the younger market.
The Department of Infrastructure is actively investigating the usage of existing tarmac areas for young people to practice driving and motor biking skills.
The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture will continue to investigate if it can make further use of its forestry areas for high-wire forest adventure facilities such as "Go Ape".
The Department of Education and Children is considering its policy to enable greater use of the Glencutchery Swimming Pool during school holidays. The Department of Community, Culture and Leisure agreed to support plans by facilitating access to, or the training of, lifeguards.
A recommendation to provide a discount card for young people using the NSC, Villa and Gaiety was rejected by the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure as it considered that young people are already entitled to substantial discounts.
Under the recommendations all departments arranging events and activities for young people should place these on the Isle of Man newspapers website, youth website and on social networking sites in order to gain maximum publicity.
