How to prevent skin dehydration

DEHYDRATION can affect every skin type and every age, especially for those with dry skin. And even in the Isle of Man’s climate it’s still a problem.

Skin dehydration is the loss of water in the skin and occurs when the skin loses more moisture than is taken in. Dehydration often leads to the thinning of the skin, promotes the development of fine lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet - all the things we want to avoid!

Skin dehydration is often a result of a hot and dry climate and prolonged exposure to the sun, which doesn’t normally apply to the Isle of Man, but the first half of the summer this year has been an exception. Other causes include not drinking enough water, poor skin hygiene, air conditioning systems and harsh poor quality soaps.

Did you know that your skin loses up to half a pint of water every day? So, clearly it needs constant replenishing. It is, therefore, essential to seal moisture directly into your skin to keep it healthy and well hydrated.

Take a trip to your local Manx chemist and they are usually very happy to help you choose the moisturiser best suited to your skin type. And make sure you drink plenty of fresh water daily, particularly on hot summer days. The recommendation is 1.5 litres a day, which sounds like a lot, but that’s what they say!

Two recommendations for dehydrated skin:-

  • Clarins Face Treatment Oil - made specially for dehydrated skin, it revitalises and helps prevent moisture loss.
  • Vaseline Intensive Care Essential Moisture - this product helps replenish and repair your skin, keeping it soft and hydrated all day long.

The tell-tale signs of dehydration:

  • general skin discomfort
  • loss of elasticity
  • feeling of skin tightness
  • fine lines and wrinkles
  • premature ageing
  • flaking and scaling
  • itching
