Visibility to be improved on Douglas junction

by isleofman.com 5th January 2011

VISIBILITY for motorists pulling out of a Douglas residential estate will be improved later this month after the Department of Infrastructure secured the necessary land to make the changes.

From Monday, January 17, work will start on Cedar Walk, on Hightonwood Hill, to improve the safety of the junction for motorists emerging onto Johnny Watterson's Lane.

The Hightonwood Hill residential estate was built in the 1980s when junction visibility splays were not routinely constructed by developers.

The forward visibility had been poor in each direction until earlier this year when the department improved the visibility at the south side of the junction. At the same time a new footway was constructed to link Cedar Walk with Carr's Lane.

Land to the north of the junction has been secured by the department to create the required visibility.

The work will involve repositioning of around 60 metres of two existing garden boundary walls. These will be moved further back from the road to ensure that drivers pulling out of the junction have a clear view of approaching traffic.

During the course of the work the department will use temporary traffic signals during working hours. It has apologised for any inconvenience caused to motorists, pedestrians and residents.

Work is scheduled to be completed by Friday, February 25.
