THE Fire and Rescue Service were called out to a fishing boat on fire on New Year's Eve.

Smoke had been reported coming from below deck of the vessel which was berthed opposite the Coastguard Station in Peel.

A fire was found within the crew bunk room and mess area to the front of the boat and involved a timber bunk and a quantity of bedding.

Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using high pressure hose reel equipment.

The vessel was unoccupied at the time of the incident and no one was hurt.

The cause of the blaze is not known at this time.

Two appliances from Peel and two from Douglas attended the scene just before 2.30pm.

A Fire service spokesman said the fire was quickly brought under control however crews remained in attendance for a further two hours checking for fire spread, investigating the cause of the blaze and liaising with the vessel's representative.
