'We won't go into debt', says Brown

by isleofman.com 2nd January 2011

The Island is not willing to go into debt to save jobs and services.

So says Chief Minister Tony Brown who admits 2011 will be a difficult 12 months for many people.

UK cuts are threatening an unprecedented squeeze on the living standards of millions of workers, families and pensioners - and with the Island also receiving reduced VAT payments from the UK Government, the Isle of Man is not immune to the difficulties.

Starting with rising petrol prices and an increase in VAT which soars to 20 per cent on Tuesday, Mr Brown admits it’s a difficult time.
