THE worst of the potholes caused by the freezing weather will be repaired as a matter of urgency, the Department of Infrastructure has said.
Highway Services manager Nigel Foster explained: "The low temperatures over the last two weeks have caused water trapped within and under the road surfaces to freeze and expand, leading to surfaces lifting or breaking up, and eventually causing potholes.
"These need to be repaired as a matter of urgency to ensure both that the roads remain safe for the public and also that any further cold weather does not make things worse.
"Over the New Year period the focus will be on making safe the worst of the defects so that they don't cause accidents, damage or injury.
"Next week, once the full workforce has returned to work after the Bank Holiday, every effort will be made to catch up with the necessary repairs."
The department said it thanked members of the public for their support and positive comments during the recent cold weather and hopes they will understand that it will take some time to get the roads back to their normal high standard.
Anyone can report potholes by ringing 686665 or emailing details to potholes@gov.im. Once reported they will go on the works schedule and be prioritised for attention.
The department asks members of the public to be as precise as possible when reporting the location of a pothole as it will allow inspections and action to be carried out more quickly.
