Compromise would allow some wildlife protection

A campaigner who fought against giving Ramsey estuary special protection status now says a compromise is needed.

Liberal Vannin activist Phil Cottier led a campaign against the area being designated a site of Special Scientific Interest, on the grounds it would restrict development and hold back economic growth in the town.

Last week DEFA Minister John Shimmin announced the ASSI status would be withdrawn.

Mr Cottier says it should be possible to protect important wildlife in the estuary and allow development along the harbour and quayside.

He says it was an all or nothing option which didn't properly address the situation:
