A CHRISTMAS message for isleofman.com readers from the Southern Neighbourhood Policing Team.
"The Southern Neighbourhood Policing Team would like to wish their community a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.
"We want everyone to enjoy the season and for it not to be marred by crime. We therefore ask that residents take simple precautions to reduce the opportunistic criminal.
"Although crime in the South is low, as it is throughout the Island, many of the crimes that are reported to us are easily preventable.
"Some simple crime prevention advice:
"Most thefts and break-ins are opportunistic and Christmas is the time when many thieves are looking out for the insecure home or vehicle.
"You can help prevent a thief targeting your property by carrying out a few simple preventative measures:
*Lock all outside doors and check that windows are closed when you go out.
*Lock garage windows and doors especially if the garage has an internal door leading to the main house.
*Lock your garden tools away and always keep your house keys in a safe place. Burglars are always happy to look under a mat, pull the string and key through the letter box, and move the large stone near the front/back door.
*Put a light on if you are out for the evening, put the radio or TV on and leave a small gap in the curtains so that a light can be seen.
*Lock your vehicle and don't leave valuables in view.
"A reminder - though none should be needed - not to drink and drive.
"A campaign throughout the Island is ongoing throughout December and a number of stop checks in conjunction with the Roads Policing Unit and vehicle testing centre have been organised.
"Officers will be very proactive in dealing with cases of sloppy or bad driving, checking vehicles and speaking with drivers with a view to seeking out those who may have consumed alcohol. Do not be tempted to consume alcohol then drive, as Christmas may end up costing an awful lot more than you bargained for.
"Be safe & enjoy!"
