New strain of MRSA detected in the Isle of Man

by isleofman.com 24th December 2010

A SMALL number of cases of a new strain of Meticillin-Resistant Staphlococcus aureus (MRSA) which affects young, fit and healthy people, have been detected in the Island.

MRSA USA 300 - like all strains of MRSA - is resistant to many antibiotics and causes infections, some of which can be very serious.

However, unlike other strains of MRSA, the USA 300 strain predominantly affects young, fit and healthy people and is predominantly transmitted in sporting facilities, gyms, swimming pools and spas.

Outbreaks of MRSA USA 300 has led to the closure of sporting facilities and gymnasiums and the disqualification of some athletes across the world.

The Island's Public Health Directorate wants to ensure that further spread of this strain is prevented and has produced posters, booklets and leaflets promoting awareness and public advice.

Invitations are being sent out to managers and coaches of all sporting activities and health clubs to attend a presentation at Keyll Darree Education and Training Centre, Strang, Douglas, on Monday, January 17 2011, at 2pm.

Anyone who wants to attend should email publichealth@gov.im or ring 642645.
