September 2010: Conor Cummins sets himself a target of a return to racing at 2011 TT

by isleofman.com 2nd January 2011

CONOR Cummins said in September that he is determined to race in the 2011 TT because he has a lot of "unfinished business" following his 150 mph crash on the Verandah during TT 2010's Senior race.

The 24 year old from Ramsey crashed out of the race on the final lap and sustained serious injuries including a back fracture, a broken arm, shoulder injuries, a bruised lung, a dislocated knee and extensive ligament damage.

At one point his injuries placed him on the "critical" list, but the Manxman who was leading the race by a comfortable margin before the race was red-flagged after Guy Martin’s huge crash at Glen Vine fought back during his two months in hospital.

Cummins has set himself a target of being much fitter by Christmas so that he can get back on a bike and start testing in March.

His injuries have left both his upper and lower body very weak, but Cummins is a determined man and doesn't mind putting in the time and effort necessary to make a full recovery.

"I intend to do my damnest to get fit for the TT. There will be a lot of blood, sweat and tears but I don't mind. I've definitely got my sights set on the 2011 TT. I've got a lot of unfinished business at the TT.

"I've had a lot of bad luck when you think about the injuries, but I’ve also had a hell of a lot of good luck because I'm still here to tell the tale. The injuries have given me more will to get back and the TT is the incentive."

The Ramsey rider is still spending a lot of time at the hyperbaric chamber in Douglas, hoping to to speed up his recovery and regain fitness levels.

"The TT is the ultimate test of man and machine - which I found out myself big time this year. At the end of the day it’s now all down to me.

"There has been a bit of negativity around about me getting back into racing at all. I want to race at the 2011 TT and if it happens it happens. If it doesn't then I'll have to re-assess.

“The TT is a big part of everyone's year, but for me it's a personal thing. It didn't happen for me this year so I've got to get back and make it right next year."

Ultimately, it's the goal of winning a TT which drives him on and Cummins is totally committed to gaining that elusive first TT victory.

"To win a TT is the best thing that could ever happen to me. I’m going to keep going until I get there."
