Fire crews are kept very busy

by isleofman.com 18th December 2010

An emergency supply of blood was delivered on time to Noble's Hospital by a fire crew on Friday.

An all-terrain vehicle was used to pick up the shipment from Ronaldsway Airport, and get it through the difficult conditions back to Braddan.

The job was classed as urgent because the delivery had to be made by a particular time.

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service says it responded to 21 calls for assistance during Friday afternoon's heavy snowfalls, and 15 people were transported to places of safety.

They included a person with diabetes, who was taken home so an insulin injection could be given.

Firefighters carried out traffic control and gritting duties at Quarterbridge to keep traffic flowing and give ambulances responding to incidents a clear run through stationary vehicles.

They also helped clear blocked roads after accidents, caused by the icy conditions.
