THE Fire and Rescue Service used cutting equipment to free occupants of vehicles involved in two separate road incidents last night (Thursday).

Station Officer John Kelly said: "As driving conditions worsened last night around 10pm fire crews were mobilised to two separate road traffic incidents which necessitated the occupants to be cut free by firefighters.

"The first incident occurred at/near the Ballagawne Road, Colby and involved one vehicle on its roof with three persons trapped inside.

"Crews assisting ambulance personnel and utilising hydraulic cutting gear released the casualties enabling the ambulance to remove them from scene for further treatment."

The second incident was on Main Road, Crosby at 10.55pm with crews responding to a two car road traffic collision with a report of one car on fire and one person trapped in the other vehicle with the steering wheel crushed into the driver's legs.

Station Officer Kelly said: "The fire turned out to be the dust being deployed from the air bag which confused the initial caller however fire crews had to utilise hydraulic cutting equipment to free the occupant to enable further treatment and transportation to hospital.

"We would like to remind the public to please drive with care in these conditions, road surfaces can deteriorate rapidly."

The emergency services are advising motorists to take extra care on the roads during the extremely cold period.

They should keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front, keep their speed down and keep the radio on for road condition updates.
