March 2010: New pet shop for the Island?

by isleofman.com 27th December 2010

PET shop Pets at Home revealed plans in March to open a superstore in the Isle of Man.

The UK chain is set to open a store in Braddan in 2011 after planning approval was granted for two big retail units to be built in the Spring Valley Industrial Estate.

Pets at Home has 240 stores across the UK selling aquariums, bulk pet food, hutches, cages and kennels.

A company spokesperson said: "We have been keen to bring the Pets at Home experience to the Isle of Man for some time.

"We hope to be able to bring our unique product range and customer service to the Island as soon as possible."

Under plans approved at appeal the Isle of Man Development Company proposed to demolish an existing unit at the industrial estate and create two units with a floor space of 18,000 square feet. There would also be an 82 space car park.

The company which owns the industrial estate was initially refused permission for the development but the decision was reversed following an appeal.

Planners turned down the application on the basis that trade would be diverted from existing shops.

Update: Pets at Home advertised for a store manager in October. No further information has since been released by the store. However an Island MHK wanted answers about policy on retail parks. Click here for more information.
