A RECORD number of people signed up to take part in the 2010 Parish Walk in June.
1,700 competitors lined up at the NSC on June 26 for the race which was started by former British 400m runner Roger Black.
Conditions on the day were warm and humid with temperatures topping 20 degrees Celsius.
The Parish Walk is acknowledged throughout Europe as one of the most challenging sporting occasions of the year with a number of overseas competitors once again attracted to take on the tough 85 miles route covering the Island's 17 parishes.
2009 winner Jock Waddington won for the third successive year. He finished in 15 hours and 18 minutes and recorded the third fastest time in parish walk history.
Susan Moore was the fastest woman home with a time of 17 hours and 44 minutes.
At the prize giving awards ceremony walker Terry Hopkins was awarded the Manx Telecom Merit Award for his performance.
Terry who is registered blind walked with his guide dog. The organisers presented the award to recognise the personal achievements of a competitor who makes a great effort but is not involved in winning any of the major honours at the front of the race.
