Six selected to become Adventure Education instructors

by isleofman.com 14th December 2010

SIX young people have been chosen to become trainee outdoor instructors as part of the Department of Education and Children's Adventure Education programme.

The candidates, whittled down from 12 at a residential selection weekend, have been chosen to introduce other young people from around the Island to outdoor hobbies and pursuits in their spare time.

The Adventure Education scheme was set up last year to boost trainee instructors' confidence, self esteem and life skills and give them knowledge of the outdoor industry.

Paul Melling, head of outdoor centres, said: "This year has seen the involvement of Britannia International in helping to support our volunteer trainees programme through the Ardwhallan Trust charity. Britannia International recognises the benefits this will have on the young people and community on the Island."

The twelve potential candidates had to complete problem solving tasks and physical activities over the course of the weekend which was held at Ardwhallan in West Baldwin.

Paul explained: "On the Sunday we were all up for a 6.30am start and a two hour hike before breakfast. After a hearty breakfast we took to the water kayaking on Injebreck reservoir. In the afternoon we found ourselves back on the water this time in open boats (Canadian canoes).

"These activities were endured in wintry conditions where we could see how the soft skills of the individuals came across. This is very important as a practitioner as you need to be able to help and inspire and bring out the best in people in extreme conditions – even if you are wet and hungry."

After the physical tests candidates were interviewed and were asked to nominate five other trainees who they felt they could work well alongside.

Liam Wiltshire, 17, Richard Gault, 18, Johanna Gledhill, 17, Emma Diamond, 17, Naemie Wilson, 22 and Lucy Connors, 18, were all selected to become volunteer instructors.

Paul concluded: "This was a very hard process and everyone contributed greatly to the weekend and made it a huge success. Thank you to everyone for coming along and supporting this scheme."
