Island Games Funding Crisis

by isleofman.com 9th December 2010

Next year's Island Games could be cancelled if not enough funds are made available for the event.

The Isle of Wight Council is having to make ?25 million worth of spending cuts over the next two years - it is currently holding on to a grant of ?350,000 to help the island host the week of competition.

Games organisers say that money is needed now.

Sports Editor Tim Glover reports:-

The Isle of Wight Organising Committee needs around ?1.5 million to stage the Games next June - 197 days now until the Opening Ceremony.

As the event gets nearer, running costs and bills are starting to come thick and fast.

Meanwhile, the Council is said to be seeking assurances that the Games will go ahead before releasing any monies when overall budgets are being squeezed hard.

It's a financial tug of war which is putting the 2011 Island Games at risk.
