FIREFIGHTERS fitted a new smoke alarm at a property in Crosby after extinguishing a washing machine fire.
The incident happened in Main Road at 9.25am today and crews from Port Erin and Castletown attended.
Station officer Carl Kinvig said crews used a carbon dioxide extinguisher to bring the fire under control.
An ambulance was requested for the occupier who was suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.
The washing machine was removed by firefighters and the fire had caused slight smoke damage to the kitchen.
Although a smoke detector was fitted in the property the battery had been removed and crews fitted a new smoke detector before leaving the incident.
Mr Kinvig offered the following safety advice to the public: "Make sure you have a working smoke alarm within your property and test it once a week.
"Practice your escape plan with everyone that lives in your house and know what to do in the event of a fire. If you would like a free home safety visit then please ring 647303."
