House discussing slaughter charges

by isleofman.com 7th December 2010

The Isle of Man's red meat trade features prominently on the question paper for the sitting of the House of Keys today (Tuesday).

There are two separate two-part questions on the issue, from MHKs David Cannan and Peter Karran.

Other topics down for discussion include a boundary review for the Island, breast surgery and the proposed Area of Special Scientific Interest in Ramsey.

Mr Cannan wants to know about the discrepancy in charges between slaughterhouses on the Island and in the United Kingdom, and whether the ending of the red meat derogation at the end of the month will cause even fewer animals to be sent to the meat plant.

Meanwhile, Mr Karran wants to know what efforts are being made to ensure that Manx meat is of a better quality than that produced elsewhere, and how clearly the quality message is being sent out.

There are a total of 13 questions for oral answer and four for written reply.

There are five questions for answer in the Legislative Council, on subjects ranging from the Steam Packet's minimum service requirement to the seconding of police officers to the Motor Sport Group of the Department of Economic Development.

Question time in the House of Keys is broadcast live on Manx Radio's AM 1368 frequency from 10am.
