Around 80 people braved the cold on Ramsey quayside today (Friday) to commemorate the 101st anniversary of the Ellan Vannin tragedy.

A simple memorial service was conducted by Canon David Greenwood of nearby St Paul's Church, who offered prayers to the 35 people who were lost when the vessel sank in the River Mersey on December 3, 1909.

Ramsey MHK and Treasury Minister Anne Craine placed a wreath on the memorial plaque, and addressed the congregation with a few words of thanks.

Among those attending were relatives of peole who lost their lives, representatives from the Steam Packet and the town's lifeboat station, and local coastguards
