Service of remembrance in Ramsey

by isleofman.com 3rd December 2010

The crew and passengers who perished when the Ellan Vannin was lost are being remembered today (Friday), on the 101st anniversary of the tragedy.

Last year for the centenary, there was a large-scale commemoration on the River Mersey, where the Steam Packet vessel went down in bad weather, en route from Ramsey.

Organiser Harry Edmudson says he was subsequently contacted by a number of relatives who wanted to see an annual event, and this time he has arranged a simple service at the Ellan Vannin memorial on the quayside at Ramsey, to see how people receive the idea.

Those in attendance will include Ramsey MHK and Treasury Minister Anne Craine, David Finlay from the Steam Packet Company and a number of representatives from the Island's coastguard and lifeboat services.

Mr Edmudson says it's extremely important to remember the 35 people who died (play audio file):

Time of service: 11am today (Friday). In the event of bad weather it will move indoors to nearby St Paul's Church.
