by isleofman.com 26th December 2010

ALMOST 6,000 people turned out to see Douglas Choral Union stage the musical version of Disney's Beauty and the Beast in February.

The local society put on the show, which ran for a week at The Gaiety Theatre in Douglas.

Director Jeremy Tustin directed a cast of more than 40 including Rachel Wild who played the role of Belle and Alex Toohey who played Gaston.

Law firm Dougherty Quinn (DQ) were principal sponsors of the production. Director Tom Maher said: "We are delighted to have been given the opportunity to become principal sponsors of Douglas Choral Union's 2010 production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

"The outstanding success of Les Misérables earlier this year highlights the quality of the Island's amateur dramatic scene and the need for the local business community to support such wonderful productions.

"DQ supports many Manx sporting, cultural and charitable causes as we believe that it is important for businesses to play its part in supporting the wider Manx community."

Isleofman.com reporter John Gregory reviewed the show. He said: "Definitely one of the best shows I have ever seen receiving standing ovations at every performance. In my opinion you wouldn't see a better more professional show anywhere in the UK outside of London's West End."

Update: Douglas Choral Union will be staging Miss Saigon in Feburary 2012. For more information click here.
