Gritters plan early morning blitz

Gritting teams are preparing to pre-salt primary 'main' routes in the north, south and east of the Island, from 5am tomorrow (Tuesday).

The Department of Infrastructure's operations team at Ellerslie Depot keeps in close contact with the Met Office, to decide when it would be most effective to treat the roads.

With wintery showers forecast on higher ground overnight, and a frost returning tomorrow, an early morning blitz on the roads is the best bet, as surfaces could freeze over during the night.

Deputy civil engineering manager Alan Hardinge says severe weather has arrived earlier than expected, but the gritters are fully prepared:
