KWC and the Buchan closed tomorrow, airport shut for the rest of today

by isleofman.com 28th November 2010

The south of the Island continues to be the area of the Island worst-hit by today's snow.

The latest casualties are King William's College and the Buchan, which will both be closed tomorrow.

KWC's bursar says a decision about Tuesday will be made tomorrow afternoon.

The main road from Ballasalla to Castletown was closed between the roundabout at the Whitestone pub and the roundabout near Victoria Road Primary School just before 5pm.

It was then reopened about 5.45pm, with the emergency services saying it's passable with extreme care.

The airport was closed just after 2.30pm and will remain so for the rest of the day.

Ballamodha Straight was closed between its junctions with Silverdale Glen and Ballabay Gawne Road just before 3.30pm, as was Shore Road, Gansey.

Snow is also causing problems on Richmond Hill, Santon, Ballasalla, Foxdale and Castletown.

The Department of Infrastructure says gritting teams are currently working in these and other areas around the Island.

Manx Radio has been inundated with calls and texts this afternoon from drivers saying the main road in the Fairy Bridge area is gridlocked, with many abandoned cars there too.

The Mountain Road was closed just after 8.30am.

Bray Hill in Douglas was shut at 10.30am, but then reopened at 12.45pm.

The Lhergy Cripperty, East Baldwin, Tholt-y-Will, Druidale and Beinn-y-Phott Roads were all shut earlier this morning.

The police are urging you to stay at home, unless your journey is absolutely necessary.

If you have to go out, take extreme care and drive according to the weather conditions, using dipped headlights.

Meanwhile, all bus services were suspended until further notice just before 9am.

Services in Onchan and Willaston are now running again, albeit just on the main roads.

They are not serving the estates.

All other buses remain suspended.
