Two weeks to submit Second Deemster applications

by isleofman.com 22nd November 2010

Moves are underway to find a new Second Deemster, following last week's announcement that His Honour David Doyle has been promoted to First Deemster and Clerk of the Rolls.

The chief secretary's office is inviting applications from suitably qualified people in the legal profession, with a closing date of Monday, December 6.

The Second Deemster is responsible for the preparation and management of cases assigned to him or her, and for presideing over court proceedings and giving judgement. There are also ceremonial duties - for example at the annual open air sitting of Tynwald - and there is a requirement to deputise when the First Deemster is unavailable.

It's a Crown appointment, which is made on the advice of a selection panel.

Candidates must be a qualified barrister, advocate or solicitor; have a comprehensive knowledge of Manx law and the Island's High Court; and a high level of professional achievement in the areas of law in which they have worked.
