Jan 2010: Spate of Manx nationalist graffiti

by isleofman.com 25th December 2010

NATIONALIST graffiti was daubed on a number of stone walls around the Island in January.

Police launched an investigation after the coordinated nationalist graffiti campaign and urged the culprits to hand themselves in.

Each slogan gave the name of a country which had gained independence from the UK and the date when this was achieved.

There were reports of graffiti in Bride, Andreas, Ramsey, Baldrine, Onchan, Sulby and Peel.

Former British colonies which were highlighted included Qatar, Jamaica, India and Cyprus and at St John's the slogan read "Mannin??".

Brian Moffatt, director of information of The Celtic League, said: "It is unfortunate that the Manx government's failure to move forward in relation to full self-determination may be leading to frustration."

Update: Arrests were made and cautions issued as a result of the police investigation.
