THE award for ‘Corporate and Social Responsibility’ at the Isle of Man Newspapers Awards for Excellence at the Villa Marina this evening will be named from three well known local organisations and companies.
Britannia International, the Department of Environment Food and Agriculture and Ramsey & District Cottage Hospital are the three nominees for the Thomas Miller sponsored award.
Britannia International has focused its attention in recent years on its social and environmental impact and has worked hard to reduce air miles, recycling and assistance for local schoolchildren in various aspects.
The company is one of the longest established offshore subsidiaries and all its staff are committed to the CSR programme, particularly support of the Island’s youth through education and sport.
Recently, Britannia also sponsored the Manx team at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and has also been involved in a practical way, working on the renovation of the Middle River cycle path in Douglas.
Ramsey & District Cottage Hospital has pioneered a pilot scheme ‘Live Well and Stay Well’ which helps chronically ill people where traditional care methods were not working.
There has been excellent feedback to the idea which was tailored from a UK scheme to meet the demands of the Isle of Man community.
An alternative approach to treatment has included the implementation of self-help, therapy and bio-psychosocial techniques.
The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture has made savings to date of £250,000 through its drive to improve energy efficiency.
The Department offers a visit to every Island household to deliver advice on energy saving and a free cost saving package worth £80.
The project is administered by Age Concern to assist vulnerable people within the community. The Energy Doctor installs energy saving light bulbs, draught excluders, cistern packs and hot water tank jackets free of charge.
The award will be presented by Bruce Kesterton of Thomas Miller.
